About Emma

I’ve been a play therapist since 2012. Before that I was a primary school teacher, but I re-trained as a play therapist because I noticed that some children were struggling to learn due to emotional issues As their teacher I cared but I didn’t know how to help them, and even if I had known I didn’t have enough time to help them individually. 

After some research I found Play Therapy UK and signed up for their play therapy training. The training really changed the way I taught and I did both jobs for a quite a while. In 2022 I finally took the leap and decided to become a freelance play therapist. I couldn’t stay in the education system as a teacher any more as I felt it was damaging to many of the children I taught, and the colleagues I worked with. I do not blame schools for this: I have worked with (and continue to work with) many wonderful teachers and schools; but the system is broken and it is failing children. I really enjoy working with schools but have now branched out into private practice and working directly with parents as well.

In 2020  I became a creative clinical supervisor. I absolutely love supporting trainee and qualified play therapists and other people working with vulnerable children: this is an impactful job and sharing knowledge and supporting one another is both vital and enriching.

 

In the meantime I've worked as a play therapy course director, written INSET, parent and CPD trainings and more recently a supervision course. I also have a book outline sitting on my hard drive that I plan to get around to sooner or later. I’ve undertaken additional training in working with Autistic people, young people and parents. The understanding of children & young people’s mental health support needs has grown but so has the need for it. There is a lot to do, and a lot to learn.
